Fire and Explosion Facilities

Sarah Willacy with fire and explosion facility

Our students have access to outstanding resources including our major academic research library, laboratories and computing facilities. The experimental fire and explosion research facilities include

- one of the largest indoor explosion research facilities world-wide for gas and dust explosions vessels (up to 50 m3)

- well equipped compartment fire rig (5 m3), with controlled air supply

- an indicative (1m3) standard fire resistance testing furnace

- a cone calorimeter (standard and modified)

- a Purser toxicity furnace

- online / real time FTIR gas analysis capability which can be used with any of the above equipment

- extensive analytical laboratories (including, TGA, GC-MS etc)

A theoretical team is also very active with a strong on modelling fire and explosion phenomena with access to zone and CFD modeling packages in both the fire and the explosion area.
