School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering

About us

The School of Process, Environmental and Material Engineering is one of the largest integrated multidisciplinary engineering schools in the world. Much of our research is challenge driven and impacts on real-world issues, to the benefit of industry and the general public.

We provide an excellent educational experience, offering both undergraduate degrees and masters courses in the areas of chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, food process engineering, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering and aviation technology.

Our postgraduate research (PhD) students are undertaking a range of projects linked directly to the work within our three research institutes.

We rank highly in the league tables for chemical engineering and we are ranked 3rd in the UK in our subject category in the latest Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 80% of our research activity rated internationally excellent or world-leading.

Our research strength ensures our degree programmes are at the forefront of knowledge and thinking. This ensures our graduates are equipped with the most up-to-date techniques, methods and knowledge bases. Our teaching has an excellent reputation and is orientated to the expressed needs of industry.

Additionally, our investment in facilities and staff ensures that we can provide an excellent experience in a friendly and supportive environment.

Our academic staff are well-connected and have established links with industry and other international organisations, both in the UK and overseas. This brings a richness to our teaching and degree programmes.

We also have well-established collaborative links with other schools in the University, and with other academic institutions around the world.

We are ranked third in the UK for chemical engineering by the Times Good University Guide 2014.
