The course aims to promote awareness and understanding of the behaviour of polymeric materials and textiles in fires. Flame retardants and mechanisms are covered as well as standard, new and developmental test methods. Theoretical models of pyrolysis and ignition are also outlined and related to test methods. Wherever possible links between theory and practice are reinforced so that the motivation underlying accepted practical procedures may be understood.
The course is very much multidisciplinary in outlook and content - a fact that is reflected in the diverse interests of the speakers - each speaker is a recognised expert in their field.
Course format
The course is split up into four main themes. Day one covers the essential concepts and science of the combustion of solids and general test methods. Day two looks at flame retardants, product testing and some general aspects of modelling. Day three focuses on various aspects of textiles in fires, including test methods, standards and methods of fire retardancy. Delegates can attend the complete course or single days.
An example course programme is available in the left hand column.
