Wireless technology and computing networks have progressed at an unprecedented rate over the last few decades. This advancement has provided the launching pad for the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Already networks of many 1000s of nodes are being tested and the forecasts are for continued explosive growth. The attributes of very low power, easy ad-hoc deployment, very many nodes and low cost characterize WSNs. And these very characteristics make them well suited to a wide range of applications. Currently development is providing node localization independently of satellite based systems and this again enhances the range of applications, reduces cost and power consumption. This course is designed to introduce, inform and provide detailed design information for WSNs with or without localization.
This course will provide delegates with a sound understanding of: WSN applications and what WSNs can provide; Hands on experience of WSN hardware; Use of WSN simulation tools to allow design and testing of network proposals; Localization, especially applied to WSNs The Level of accuracy positioning systems can achieve; Appreciation of implementing networks (with and without awareness of location)
The course will be delivered by a small team of practitioners and academics, all experts in their particular fields of contribution. The participant learning experience will be enhanced by hardware practical lab sessions and simulation work. Lectures will also be supported by a full set of notes.
