Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Course details

This course will cover how RFID tags and readers are designed and how they integrated into systems. Core aspects of the design are covered; transponder and reader designs including electromagnetic considerations, antenna design, near field and far field. Broader aspects of the technology are considered including: intellectual property, standards, ethical, social and privacy issues. Applications of intelligent tags to the retail industry, including technologies such as sensing food quality, and the business issues related to them will be extensively covered.

- Standards
- Business issues
- Systems integration; networking, data management
- Intellectual property in RFID field
- Ethical, social and privacy issues
- Technologies and frequency bands. Active and passive tags.
- Transponder and reader design
- Electromagnetic considerations, antenna design, near field and far field systems, tag environment
- Other approaches; smart inks, SAW, magnetic, etc
- Package integration and printable electronics technologies
- Food and Perishable Goods Condition Monitoring
- The wider context; Pervasive Computing Technology
