Teaching and Research take up most of my time. Eric Atwell's workload allocation
# I teach MSc and BSc modules in Natural Language Processing; Data Mining and Text Analytics; and Professional Development; I supervise MSc and BSc student research projects; and I am Personal Tutor for MSc Advanced Computer Science students.
# I lead research projects, including the Leeds contribution to EPSRC/ESRC/CPNI-funded 2.2M-pound research project IDEAS Factory - Detecting Terrorist Activities: Making Sense, as featured in The Engineer; JISC-funded project e-Health GATEway to the Clouds to enable secure research access to anonymized e-Health patient records; HEA-funded project to collect Web-based resources for teaching and research in Islamic Studies, and EPSRC-funded project Natural Language Processing Working Together With Arabic And Islamic Studies.
# I supervise PhD research student projects; see FEEDBACK from past and current students
# My administrative support work includes Fire Warden, and various committees eg staff recruitment panels, and Board of the Faculty of Engineering
# My remaining time is for strategic planning and development activities; e.g. to write research grant proposals, research journal and conference papers, textbooks, websites for NLP group and Arabic Language Computing group, blog , etc; serve on the UK EPSRC Peer Review College and AHRC Peer Review College of research experts in Engineering and Science, and Arts and Humanities respectively; I was National Coordinator of the HEFC-JISC Knowledge Based Systems Initiative; and been External Examiner or Guest Lecturer at over 20 UK and overseas Universities; see my CV.

# FEEDBACK: Please let me know if you think I'm doing a GOOD JOB ... or not?!

Research activities

My research Eric in Saudi dress speciality is Corpus Linguistics and Text Analytics: Machine Learning and Data Mining analysis of a CORPUS of text - in English, Arabic, or other languages - to analyse the text and detect "interesting" and "useful" features or patterns. For example:
  - detecting terrorist activities, by analysis of documents from terrorist suspects, to highlight suspicious parts of the text
  - analysis and text-mining of the Quran, to find links and patterns in the Quran verses and chapters whcih are of interest to Islamic and Religious Studies scholars.
   - detecting Cause of Death from Verbal Autopsy text documents describing the circumstances of the death.

I work with the Language research group (nlp@comp.leeds.ac.uk), part of the I-AIBS Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological Systems. See some ideas for corpus linguistics PhD projects, GUIDELINES on writing a successful PhD proposal, and my video clip.
I am most proud of the 20 research students I have supervised, who went on to work in a range of careers, including Web search, banking and finance, text analytics, translation and language consulting, online news, voice-to-text, the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, and, of course, as University academics ! See FEEDBACK from current and past students.
