Wastewater Treatment and Reuse
The wastewater treatment group has recognised skills in design and operation of large
wastewater treatment plants for European cities and have worked on the plants for: Athens,
Jersey, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield.
It also has world-leading expertise in wastewater treatment plant design using waste stabilisation ponds and pond effluent reuse in agriculture and aquaculture, and has worked in several developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America.
The group's key research themes are:
Large treatment plant design
- Design, operation and control of large activated sludge plants
- Nutrient removal systems
- Sludge foaming and bulking
- Resource recovery (methane, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus) from wastewaters
Waste stabilization ponds and wastewater reuse
- Waste Stabilisation Ponds
- Wastewater use in agriculture and aquaculture
- Quantitative microbial risk analysis
