Waste composting is an area of particular interest.

Solid Waste Management

The School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds has a long-established track record in waste management both in developed and developing countries.

The group has both a pathogen focus and an involvement in the wider aspects of waste and resource management.

Research interests in the team include:

  • Waste composting
  • Anaerobic digestion and energy recovery
  • Novel systems for identifying and enumerating pathogens in waste
  • Control of airborne microorganisms in waste management facilities
  • Waste minimisation and resource recovery
  • Evaluating stabilisation and sanitisation in waste treatment systems

These research interests are also carried into the team's teaching on masters courses run by the Institute in Sustainable Waste Management and Environmental Engineering and Project Management.

Research is funded by the EPSRC, EU, Defra and industry and is undertaken with partners in other universities, Government bodies and NGOs.
