School of Mechanical Engineering

Our research

The School of Mechanical Engineering is internationally recognised for high quality fundamental and applied research covering many aspects of mechanical engineering science and practice.

We achieve and encourage multidisciplinary collaborations through our four interdisciplinary research institutes and our two Centres for Doctoral Training in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

Institute of Design, Robotics and Optimisation covers robotics; surgical technologies (eg laproscopic devices); multidisciplinary design optimisation; and design sciences (product requirements and supply chains).

Institute of Functional Surfaces focusses on reactions at fluid and solid surfaces and interfaces. Main areas of research and innovation include: tribology and surface engineering (lubricants, materials, tribo-chemistry and tribo-corrosion); flow assurance in the oil and gas sector (including scale formation, corrosion and erosion-corrosion).

Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering aims to find medical engineering solutions for the ageing population and addresses major healthcare challenges in musculoskeletal and cardiovascular disease in the areas of: in vitro and preclinical biotribology and biomechanical simulation systems; longer lasting joint replacements and biological scaffolds for regenerative therapies.

Institute of Thermofluids focusses on combustion (in engines and hazards), heat transfer (eg in electronics systems), manufacturing fluids processing (eg pharmaceutical, coating and printing) and computational fluid dynamics (eg multiphase flows and wetting).

Our research is underpinned by extensive industrial collaborations and excellent experimental facilities, including the following funded by the EPSRC:

Our research income on average is £6.1m p.a. comprised from a number of different funding sources including Research Councils UK, industry, UK Government, UK charities and EU Government.

We place a strong emphasis on the transfer of
knowledge to industry and technology transfer
organisations. This takes the form of licences, spinout
activities, IP filings, consultancies, conference
organisation and training through short courses.

Joint 4th in the UK for the quality of our research, in our unit of assessment, according to the REF2014.
