Carbon Research Group
The Leeds Carbon Research Group offers, on a contract consultancy basis, a highly successful research-based course on Carbon Science and Technology, incorporating the latest developments in the field. This has been delivered at the request of industrial (and academic) clients annually or more since 2005.
Course lectures:
1. Structure: Forms of carbon, Crystalline structures, Properties of graphite 2. Synthetic Carbons: Graphitizing and non-graphitizing carbons, Characterization methods 3. Pitch: Composition, Characterization, Rheology 4. Mesophase: Pitch pyrolysis, Coke development, Transformation diagrams 5. Resins & Fibres: Resins and pyrolysis behaviour, Orientation and texture, Characterization of orientation, Thermal conductivity 6. Bulk Carbon: Carbon products (polygranular / CVD / composites), Properties, Microstructures 7. Sintered Carbon: Mesophase microbeads, Graphite additions 8. Carbon-Carbon Composites: Manufacture, Microstructure, Properties, Applications.
If required, the course could also be tailored to include lectures on topics such as Nuclear Graphites and / or Thermal Atomic Force Microscopy as well as, for small groups, practical introductions to techniques such as X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, gas sorption analysis, mechanical testing etc.
