Professor Stephen J. Russell |
Research Interests
Textile materials science and technology, nonwoven science and engineering, fibre and fabric manufacturing; nonwoven product design and engineering of structures for medical, healthcare, industrial and consumer sectors.
Prof. Russell’s research is primarily concerned with the manufacturing and process-structure-property relationships of textile materials, particularly engineered technical textiles and nonwoven assemblies. He is interested in the fundamental relationships that govern the properties and performance of nonwoven fibrous structures and how their architecture and properties may be influenced and controlled during manufacture. This is fundamental to the design and engineering of advanced materials that are incorporated in to a raft of consumer, medical, healthcare and industrial products and have rigorous performance requirements. Outcomes include micro-cavitied spunlace materials with highly directional specific permeability enabling controlled delivery, thermally resistant nanoporous-nonwoven assemblies and a new genre of inherently insecticidal textile for combating insect vector-borne disease.
