Research Interest

Characterisation of Materials by Electron Microscopy Techniques

My research interests involve the characterisation of materials, in particular catalysts and other nano-sized particles, by electron microscopy techniques.  Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to examine many things including crystalline structure, and combined with other complementary techniques available within the microscope (such as STEM, EDX, EELS, EFTEM, etc) a wealth of information can be obtained.  Materials of particular interest include photocatalysts for the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen.  The conversion of solar energy is a desirable option in the development of alternative fuel sources, however an ideal material suitable for this type of reaction has yet to be reported.  Working with collaborators from the Department of Chemistry at the University of York we are interested in developing and characterising new catalysts in this field.
