World Class Facilities

The Institute of Engineering Systems and Design is part of an engineering faculty that is within the UK's top 10 research centres, boasting excellent facilities. In addition to these, iESD researchers have access to the following quality facilities and specialist equipment:

An advanced mechatronics laboratory where prototype devices can be built and tested.

The University's Charterhouse Rehabilitation Technologies Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility that includes a sophisticated opto-electronic motion tracking system, which is used to support the development of novel restorative rehabilitation technologies. The facility is well configured and located to enable key user groups of prospective devices to be evaluated on-site.

A purpose-built Design Systems laboratory that includes soft metrology facilities and access to experimental software prototypes.

A design observation suite where researchers can make audio-visual recordings to study ways in which people interact with technology and new products, including affective evaluation experiments and consumer studies.

The University is currently investing in a state-of-the-art high performance computing (HPC) facility to which we anticipate having access from 2010 onwards.
