Institute of Integrated Information Systems

Research

I3S is internationally recognised for its leading reputation in the following areas:

Research activities in the Institute of Integrated Information Systems (I3S) is concentrated in the broad areas of: Communications Engineering, Instrumentation and Positioning.

Research into Communications Engineering includes all aspects of fixed, mobile and satellite communications, radiowave propagation, signal processing and coding. A new wireless communications laboratory has recently been constructed and £1.3 million of strategic research infrastructure funding (SRIF) from HEFCE has enabled a complete refurbishment of all the Institute labs.

The Wireless Communications area, in particular, is also benefiting from excellent industrial support. In recognition of the Institute’s strength in this area, Yorkshire Forward has established the Centre for Industrial Co-operation (CIC) in Wireless Technology, enabling the School to lead wireless activities in the region.

Research into Instrumentation and Positioning includes the fields of process tomography, (the study of industrial processes by remote means), WSNs and that of satellite navigation and positioning. These areas attract substantial financial support from EPSRC, and Industry.
