What is an MEng?

Learning and Assessment - Postgraduate - School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering

The majority of our Engineering and Computing degree courses are integrated masters degrees (MEng, BEng), meaning they extend your undergraduate studies to postgraduate level.

The 4 year MEng fulfils all of the necessary academic requirements on the route to Chartered Engineer status, a vital distinguishing qualification in the UK job market.

Although the MEng is the most direct way of meeting the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer; some students, and in particular those from overseas, may prefer to graduate with a BEng or BSc after 3 years to allow them to undertake an MSc course or PhD or go directly into employment.

Benefits of an MEng:

  • An MEng degree is the necessary academic qualification and the most direct and recognised route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) Status.
  • You will have the opportunity to work on a greater range of project work, including group work. As a result of our strong industrial links, the individual or group project work will have a greater degree of industrial involvement.
  • The MEng will help you develop practical transferable skills such as teamwork, decision making, delegation, identifying and solving problems, and communications skills.Provides you with a greater breadth and depth of study
  • Future career prospects are excellent, and MEng graduates can expect to command higher salaries.

What our students say:

Melanie, MEng Civil with Environmental Engineering student: "I believe the reason I have been offered multiple jobs is because I am studying an Integrated Masters degree. Masters students are more sought after by employers and there are many options as to which industry we can work in after graduation. I feel I am now better equipped to start work as a professional engineer due to completing my masters. I have had more time to tailor my degree towards my career interests, which is very beneficial, and when you start work the pay is higher for a masters student. As all the students are together for four years and have made strong friendships this has benefited everyone as we are able to help each other and form closer teams when we undertake project work."

Phillip, MEng Mechatronics and Robotices student: "By doing the Masters year of my degree, I feel that I have gained a number of different things. Firstly I have gained an easier entrance into a job that most other bachelor degree entries would. Also, the experience of working as part of a team for project work, which will provide extremely important throughout my future career."
