School of Mechanical Engineering

Our research is designed to influence, respond to and engage in industrial, societal and legislative initiatives and drivers. These drivers include energy efficiency, sustainability, environmental impact, emissions, safety, healthcare, and challenges of an ageing population.

To help us achieve this we have three Research Institutes and a Doctoral Training Centre:

Institute of Engineering Systems and Design
Research into: Next generation healthcare devices; Energy efficient vehicles; Affective engineering design; Design sciences.

Institute of Engineering Thermofluids, Surfaces and Interfaces
Research into: Combustion; Thin films; Tribology; Corrosion; Engineering optics/metrology; Biomimetics; Spray Dynamics.

Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering
Research into: Joint replacement; Tissue re-engineering; Cardiac imaging and modelling; Cartilage tissue substitution; Spine Biomechanics.

Doctoral Training Centre in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in partnership with the Universities of Sheffield and York.
