Energy and Environment - Environmental Mitigation

Water treatment, Faculty of Engineering Research into environmental mitigation

We have a range of expertise in the area of 'environmental mitigation' which can be broken down under the following headings: Contaminant remediation; Reducing emissions (and carbon sequestration); Waste and water treatment; Flood risk and river management; Sensors.

Contaminant remediation

We have two research institutes working in the area of contaminant remediation: the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure specifically novel treatment methods for waste; the Pathogen Control Engineering Institute is involved in bioremediation of contaminated land and groundwater.

The Institute of Engineering Thermofluids, Surfaces and Interfaces also has some research activity and student projects in this area although it is not the primary focus of their activity.

Reducing emissions (and carbon sequestration)

A major research area for the Energy and Resources Research Institute is work on carbon capture and storage for large scale power generation systems, reducing emissions from road and aviation transport, emissions from the use of renewable and future fuels.

Additional projects involve the Institute of Engineering Thermofluids, Surfaces and Interfaces; the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure for example, carbon impact of structural elements, sequestration of carbon in construction materials and carbon capture and storage and; the Pathogen Control Engineering Institute for energy efficient treatment of waste and waste water.

The Institute for Materials Research is developing high temperature piezoelectric materials and devices for fuel efficient control strategies in both automotive and aero engines.

Waste and water treatment

The Pathogen Control Engineering Institute is actively engaged in research in the area of solid waste and waste water treatment and the provision of clean drinking water.

Flood risk and river management

The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure and the Pathogen Control Engineering Institute are actively engaged in research in the area of flood risk and river management.

Sensors

The Institute of Integrated Information Systems is developing new sensor systems for a wide range of applications including environmental monitoring for pollution control and intelligent transport systems.
