We have a range of expertise in the built environment broken down under the following headings: Resilient infrastructure; Pubic systems and services; Surveillance; Transport infrastructure; Intelligent transport systems; Materials for the built environment

Resilient infrastructure

The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure is actively engaged in research in this area. Visit their website for more information. The Pathogen Control Engineering Institute is involved in research into design of healthcare facilities including mitigating climate change.

Public systems and services

The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure is actively engaged in research in this area. Visit their website for more information.

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological Systems has a history of collaboration with the utility industry in work funded by the EPSRC and the TSB for improving the mapping of underground utility assets and in integrating utility map records with a multi-sensor device designed to detect buried apparatus. Find out more.

Surveillance

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological Systems is actively engaged in research designed to help automate the task of surveillance from the many cameras covering the urban and transport network.

Transport infrastructure

The Institute for Computational and Systems Scienceis home to world leading research in transport scheduling which has been commercialised and operates as the AIM-listed spin-out company Tracsis.

The Energy and Resources Research Institute also has some research activity in this area of road and aviation emissions, including air quality issues.

Intelligent transport systems

The Institute of Integrated Information Systems is actively engaged in research in the development of new wireless communication systems, communication networks and sensors, and their integration in the transport infrastructure to provide intelligence and optimise the performance of the system and the user experience.

Materials for the built environment

The Institute for Resilient Infrastructure is a world leader in this area, actively involved in research into cement and concrete including the nature of C-S-H, alternative binder systems and novel uses for cement based materials.
