Faculty of Engineering

Our research

The Faculty of Engineering is one of the UK’s top engineering and computing faculties, with an international reputation for teaching and research.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008) the Faculty achieved an overall grade-point average (GPA) of 2.94 with an impressive 75 per cent of activity rated as internationally excellent or world leading, placing the Faculty 7th in the UK.

The range and scope of our research is extensive and covers all of the major engineering disciplines - civil, mechanical, electronic and electrical, chemical engineering and computer science - and including energy, materials, artificial intelligence, with theoretical, experimental and modeling work underpinning all areas.

The breadth of our research portfolio provides an ideal platform for multidisciplinary research and enables us to undertake research that is able to respond to global challenges. To this end, we have three broad impact themes which are, Energy and Environment, Global Infrastructure, Health and Human Interface plus a range of enabling technologies. Visit our research themes and enabling technologies pages for more information.

If you are interested in studying for a research degree in the Faculty then please visit our research degrees pages.

The Faculty of Engineering Research Office is a useful resource for academic staff in the Faculty (staff intranet) providing information on funding, deadlines and other useful links.
