PhD Studentship - UK/EU

PhD Project: Novel wear models for hip replacements
School of Mechanical Engineering

In partnership with the EU FP7, the University of Leeds wishes to recruit an outstanding engineering, physical or biological sciences graduate who wishes to embark on a career in medical engineering.

You will join the world leading Institutes of Medical and Biological Engineering as well as the Institute of Functional Surfaces, which houses over 100 graduate researchers and the largest experimental research facility in the world for joint simulation in a new purpose-built facility. Further, the Scholarship will form part of a consortium of 15 European partners led by Leeds focused on the development of new technologies and testing methods for hip replacement.

Supervised by Prof Richard M Hall, and co supervised by Dr Joanne Tipper, Professor Anne Neville (University of Leeds) and Dr Rob Hewson (Imperial College) you will develop and research the novel models of wear for application in hip replacements.

Value: This studentship, which is open to UK/EU students in the first instance, will pay the academic fees at the EU/UK rate (£3,975), as well as providing an annual stipend of approximately £13,863 per year (subject to increase in future years) for 3.5 years.

Number of awards: 1

Entry requirements: Applications are invited from candidates with or expecting a minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree (2:1), or equivalent, in a Biological Science or Engineering discipline.

The opportunity will be appropriate for graduates wishing to pursue a career in medical engineering and medical device technology. In addition, evidence of high levels of communication and team-working skills are highly desirable.

Main contact: Contact Professor Richard Hall to discuss this project further informally.

Application deadline: Open until filled.

How to Apply: Formal applications for research degree study should be made on-line through the University's website.
