The School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering is one of the largest integrated multidisciplinary engineering schools in Europe. The School is ranked 3rd in its subject category in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 80% of staff in the School rated 3* or 4* denoting internationally excellent or world Leading research.
The School has 3 prestigious doctoral training grants available for the very best UK and EU students. These prestigious awards are made by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Applications are invited for research within any of the research areas supported by the School. These areas include: advanced combustion science and engineering; environmental pollution control, monitoring and modelling; air and ground transportation; computational fluid dynamics; functional materials; fibrous structures; metallurgy; characterisation and modelling; particulate measurement systems; particulate systems modelling; manufacture of advanced particles.

Value
The award covers academic fees, an annual maintenance award of approximately £13,590 in the first year (typically rising with inflation for subsequent years) and additional funds for fieldwork and travel. Awards are for 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory performance.
To be eligible for the award, you must have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years preceding the start date of the award, and eligible to pay fees at the home/EU rate. EU candidatures who have been resident in the UK for three years (including for education) are eligible for the full award. Other EU candidates may receive a fees-only award.

A minimum of a 2.1 honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering, physical science, mathematics or relevant discipline.
