The School of Mechanical Engineering is internationally recognised for high quality fundamental and applied research covering many aspects of Mechanical Engineering Science and Practice.
The School achieved an impressive 75% of staff rated internationally excellent or World leading in the latest UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), placing the School in the top 5 in the UK.
The School has 1 prestigious doctoral training grants available for the very best UK and EU students. These prestigious awards are made by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Applications are invited for research within any of the research areas supported by the School exc. iMBE. These areas include: advanced mechatronic & robotic systems; sustainable socio-technical systems; sustainable products; design services; tribology & surface engineering; thermofluids & combustion; engineering fluids & micro/nanofluids; biomimetics & bioinspiration; engineering optics.

Value
The award covers academic fees, an annual maintenance award of approximately £13,590 in the first year (typically rising with inflation for subsequent years) and additional funds for fieldwork and travel. Awards are for 3.5 years, subject to satisfactory performance.
To be eligible for the award, you must have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least 3 years preceding the start date of the award, and eligible to pay fees at the home/EU rate. EU candidatures who have been resident in the UK for three years (including for education) are eligible for the full award. Other EU candidates may receive a fees-only award.

A minimum of a 2.1 honours degree, or equivalent, in engineering, physical science, mathematics or relevant discipline.
