UltraCane gives blind and partially sighted freedom to roam

Published Wednesday 19 October 11

Professor Brian HoyleA smart ‘white cane’ that alerts users to obstacles has been launched in the UK to coincide with national Disability Awareness Month.

The UltraCane™ uses ultrasonic waves - just as bats do - to help blind and partially sighted people sense their way around.

The technology was developed from work on advanced ultrasound sensors by Professor Brian Hoyle, in the School of Process, Materials and Environmental Engineering. The multi-disciplinary University of Leeds project team also included biologist Dr Dean Waters, neurophysiologist Professor Deborah Withington, and others.

For coverage of the UltraCane™ on BBC Breakfast, including an interview with Professor Hoyle, see Bats inspire ultrasonic cane for blind.

The product is currently being exhibited at Leeds City Museum.
