Make Some Noise

make some noise 2008

Graduate researchers across the Faculty are currently taking part in Make Some Noise a summer Festival of Research and Public Engagement.

Training and competition opportunities have been themed to develop effective communications skills and include poster, presentation and visual imaging.  However, this is researcher training with a twist: the related practice opportunities are all aimed at communicating with non-specialist audiences.

Graduates are taking their posters to a Science, Engineering and Technology Fun Day being organised for Garforth Community College, Leeds 13 June.  They’ll also be offering science demonstrations and activities for an expected audience of 100 sixth formers.

Presentations will be given to research peers at an interdisciplinary one-day event 3rd July in the Rhodes Lecture Theatre, culminating in an early evening reception and open Guest Lecture from Noel Sharkey, Professor of AI and Robotics, Sheffield University. As well as a stellar research and academic career Noel is passionate about engaging the public with science. Best known as Chief Judge on TV’s popular Robot Wars, Noel is a Professor of Public Engagement, Computer Science and an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow. He has worked on many other programmes, magazines and projects aimed to inspire public understanding, knowledge and critical engagement with science and technology.

Meanwhile, the photography competition is open to all research students and staff in the Faculty.  Can you turn your scientific images into art? An exhibition of the entries will be held in The Light, Leeds town centre, July 9-14th, allowing the wider public insights into the groundbreaking research taking place in Engineering.
