£3 Million Laboratory Launch

laboratory launch

The Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (iMBE) recently launched their newly refurbished joint simulation facility, the Wolfson Foundation Laboratory.

The Wolfson Foundation Laboratory is the largest academic facility in the world for the experimental functional simulation of artificial joint replacements. The facility, comprising of over one hundred individual stations for hip, knee, spine, and ankle research, has a capital value of £3 million, and includes models and methods that are unique to Leeds.

A prestigious grant from the Royal Society was awarded to iMBE for the refurbishment. The grant was used to upgrade the laboratory into a category 2 laboratory environment, in line with iMBE’s strategy to develop methods and models for tissue substitution therapies.

The refurbishment was completed on a tight 14 week schedule, with many of the joint simulators remaining in-situ.

The launch event, held on the 20th June, was a celebration of the new working environment for iMBE researchers and technicians. Members of the iMBE research group were given tours of the new facility by the iMBE technical team.
