Energy Research Institute Analytical Laboratory

We provide industry and commerce with access to our world-class expertise in energy and related areas. We provide bespoke services, ranging from one-off activities to long-term collaborations. Industry can also gain access to our extensive analytical and processing facilities and supporting expertise, located in the new state-of-the-art £12.5m Energy Building on the University of Leeds campus.

We have recently benefitted from a £0.5m investment in state-of-the-art sample preparation and analytical instrumentation (HEFCE SRIF 4).

Our facilities are available to all researchers in the School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering. Researchers from other Schools within the University may be given access by individual arrangement. We also support teaching within the School by hosting practical classes and student projects.

  • Chromatography
    - Identification and/or quantification of components in organic solution or by headspace analysis
  • Spectrometry
    - Fast analysis of the functional groups in solid, liquid and gas samples
  • Thermal Analysis
    - Analysis of reactions by monitoring sample weight and/or heat flow against time and temperature
  • Elemental Analysis
    - CHNSO (ultimate) analysis of solids and liquids
    - Trace-level determination of elements in solution
  • Fuel Tests
    - A range of standard fuel property tests are available
  • Sample Preparation

    A variety of sample preparation techniques are available
