FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

For students seeking placements

All students who wish to go out on a placement in 2009-2010 must register with the Placement Tutor as soon as possible during the first semester of the 2008-09 year. Please see the Placements Tutor, Dr Alison Marshall, room 6.25 or email placements@comp.leeds.ac.uk. You also need to complete a Change of Programme Form (see below). If you are interested in Summer Internships, see this page.

General Information

An overview of the requirements and procedures will be given in a presentation to students on Wednesday 29th September 2010, 14.00-15.00 in the Active Learning Lab.

Change of Programme Forms

  • ALL students hoping to get a placement MUST complete a change of programme form by the end of December.
  • These forms are available from the CSO (Computing Student Office) in the Long Room.
  • You need to complete the form even if you applied for a degree "with industrial placement" when originally applying to the University.
  • Filling in the form is separate from registering your interest in doing a placement with the placement tutor.
  • If you don't get a placement, or if you change your mind later, it is easy to change back.

Preparing your CV and Application

The Careers Centre hold regular CV clinics, and also have a dedicated Work Placement Centre link, with a drop-in service Monday to Friday 9 am to 4.15 pm.

Finding Placement Opportunities

The School of Computing receives a steady stream of enquiries for placement students and these opportunities are placed on the VLE in the Placements Discussion Forum. To browse to this page, first log into the VLE, then select 'Discussion' on the left hand side and then 'Placements'. These will be the best opportunities as you know they are specifically looking for students from the School. However, there are a number of other sources that you should also use.

Other Sources

  • Careers Centre website
  • The Year in Industry agency offer an excellent service.
  • A new student and graduate web site available from IEE that also has a link-up with doctorjob.com

Equalitec, a website to encourage the recruitment, retention and progression of women in ITEC careers, partly funded by the DTI, will be an innovative tool for companies and HE institutions to address the gender imbalance in the workforce.
The site will provide an on-line database of female undergraduates requiring placements and companies offering placement opportunities across Europe. http://www.equalitec.org.uk/
  • Your parents, family or friends may be able to provide introductions to organisations they work for.
