Information for companies about industrial placements

The School of Computing welcomes approaches from companies interested in employing our undergraduates for either a 3 month summer placement or a 9-12 month industrial placement.

For the 9-12 month placement our students enter industry in their third year, having completed 2 years of academic study prior to joining a placement. As well as having a useful additional worker for 9-12 months, a placement offers the company the possibility of a year long interview. Many companies now use placements as the main mechanism for attracting permanent full time graduates.

Placement students are salaried employees of the company.

In order to be eligible for hosting a placement student, we require that the host organisation fully complies with all relevant UK Health and Safety legislation (for more details please see the company responsibilities page. There is also the expectation that whilst on placement students will carry out meaningful work under the direct supervision of a manager.

The student will be allocated a mentor from the School of Computing (a member of academic staff) who will visit the student on placement at least once during the placement year.

Please see the company responsibilities page for details of the responsibilities of the Company to the School of Computing and to the Student.
