School of Computing

Our research

Our research ranges from breakthrough results in the theoretical foundations of computer science through to highly applied computational modelling and systems engineering, carried out in collaboration with leading companies.

The School is ranked in the top ten for research according to the latest Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), achieving an impressive 80% of staff rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.

Over the past seven years we have attracted grants from each of the seven UK Research Councils, government departments, the European Union and many industrial sources. We have also created the Yorkshire Computing Network to broaden our channels of knowledge transfer to industry and public sector organisations, and host community-building meetings.

Current research is carried out within two Institutes.

Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological systems, which covers the following research themes:

Institute for Computational and Systems Science, which covers the following research themes:

The School is home to a large community of research staff and students, with over 30 research staff and 70 research students working as groups within dedicated research laboratories. Groups are led by senior staff who are internationally recognised leaders in their field, and each one runs an active series of research meetings and seminars.
