Computer science research institutes and groups

Computer Science Research falls into two broad categories at Leeds University School of Computing and, as such, falls into two different institutes.

The Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Biological Systems builds on our internationally recognised research into intelligent systems. This includes learning in video analysis, corpus-based language studies, qualitative reasoning about space and time, and investigations into computational mechanisms in biological cells and organisms.

The Institute for Computational and Systems Science centres its research and work on problems affecting computers or questions answered via computational methods. This work might include algorithms and their complexity, high-performance numerical methods in scientific computing and interface and programming technologies for visual computing amongst other things.

The broad based nature of both research institutes allows us to offer a number of courses to both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of computer science research. It also ensures that we can provide you with the latest top-of-the-range facilities to help you maximise your potential.

The existence of these institutes also gives you the chance to progress your work from undergraduate level through to PhD. This means that from starting your studies with us right through to developing your own thesis in a specialist sector of computer science research, we can help you achieve your potential.

We have 30 academic staff, all actively pursuing their own areas of research and we also have 70 research students at Leeds University School of Computing.
