As part of a Computer Science BSc you will be exposed to a number of learning and assessment methods, designed to broaden your experiences and understanding of the core themes.
Lectures are the primary form of teaching but you will also be able to engage in smaller group meetings, get hands-on in workshops and work at your own pace with your personal projects. So let’s take a look at these main forms of teaching at Leeds University School of Computing.
Lectures
As the main source of teaching, lectures form a vital part of a Computer Science BSc. These will form the foundations from which your studies will grow.
The different courses are led by different lecturers so you will benefit from a vast pool of knowledge and experience as well as different styles and approaches.
Seminars
These are commonly seen as the little brother to the lectures. In these smaller groups, you will have the chance to discuss, in more detail, the key themes stemming from the lectures, whilst also stirring new areas of thought and debate.
It is also in these group sessions where you can benefit from greater interaction with tutors.
Laboratories
Many of the modules require some time to be spent in laboratories. The main benefit stemming from this is that it allows you to apply the theory to a practical model. The laboratory-based time is a vital component of the Computer Science BSc as it promotes problem solving and time management.
Personal Projects
For many students taking a Computer Science BSc, the personal project forms the most enjoyable strand. With the benefit of an allocated personal supervisor, this is the type of learning and assessment that puts all of the theory and modules into practice.
You will have the supervision of a tutor guiding you but it is very much about taking control of your own research and schedule to deliver the best results to a project, decided by you.
The different forms of assessment like practical’s, mock exams, actual exams and individual projects are designed to test you in a number of different scenarios.
