Placements - Year in Industry
The School of Computing runs a 'year in industry' (sandwich) placement scheme, whereby students work in a company between their second and third years. These pages provide information about Industrial Placements undertaken by students from the School of Computing at the University of Leeds. Some students also do Summer Internships, which are covered here.
An industrial placement is one academic year spent working for a company and not studying in the University. Students who do these placements take four years to complete their degree: they take the normal modules during three years and the placement takes an extra year. This extra year is always the third of the four years.
During your placement, you will work under the direct supervision of a manager at the company. You will be allocated a mentor from the School of Computing who will arrange at least one visit to the company during your placement.
Why should I do a placement?
Very briefly, to improve your chances both of getting a good job and of getting a good class of degree.
- The experience should help you get a job after graduation.
- You may find that the company where you do the placement will offer you a job.
- The assessed work in the module will help you to think about what you have gained from the placement, and to be able to express this clearly in job interviews etc.
- The skills you acquire during the placement will enable you to perform better in your final year of study. It has been shown that students who do placements tend to show a greater improvement in grades between the second and final years compared with students who do not do placements.
