Research Credentials: Your degree will be recognised and respected throughout the world
The School is an established centre of excellence for computer science, artificial intelligence and informatics. The most recent Research Assessment Exercise gave the School's research a rating of 5, affording our research groups international standard. Not only does this confirm its status as one of the foremost IT research centres in the UK it also means your supervisor(s) and group environment will be leading researchers in your chosen field.
Multi-disciplinarity, Applications and Industrial Links
The School not only conducts research in the foundations of computer science, but also in a variety of applied and multidisciplinary settings. We have excellent links with many other departments in the University: for example, Biology, Maths, Earth Sciences and Linguistics. You can be co-supervised by two departments. We have broad connections to industry, including Accenture, BT, Shell and many others, with regular CASE studentship awards for PhD research projects in conjunction with an industrial partner.
First-class Facilities
High-quality equipment is available throughout your degree. Each research student is equipped with a state-of-the art workstation with both Linux and Windows platforms. The School has a pervasive wireless network. You also have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art graphics and visualisation laboratories as well as a virtual reality suite, the White Rose grid and a 3D visualisation holobench. Of course, the university has excellent libraries with over2.5 million items.

The School is a friendly environment. The support of a supervisor and a research group means that you have every opportunity to discuss your ideas and research, get help and make friends. The university has a wide range of facilities that provide support to students, including welfare services, a thriving student union, a medical centre and skills and language centres.

The Leeds city campus is in walking distance to the thriving city centre. Leeds complements its economic success with a lively arts and entertainment scene and hosts a huge variety of shopping facilities. Sporting opportunities also abound and within half an hour of the city centre you will discover areas of outstanding beauty, including three national parks: The Yorkshire Dales and Pennines, the North Yorkshire Moors and the Vale of York. And should you really want to get away, Leeds is very well connected to other parts of the UK, with London reachable by rail in just over two hours
