ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

With the introduction of the new Eurocode, EC3, structural engineering designers and detailers will find their existing computerised design systems incomplete in many areas.

At the same time, the growth of Windows and the latest generation of personal computers has made complex calculations such as finite element analysis more widely available to PC users.

One of the principal goals of the CIMsteel project is integration of information flows in the design and manufacture of structural steelwork. A range of software development projects is ensuring that the computerised analysis and design tools necessary for a fully integrated manufacturing process across Europe will be available in the future.

Specific objectives include:

  • developing software to EC3 design models
  • developing new concepts in software which genuinely reflect designers' current working practices
  • prototyping software usage within the CIMsteel "Open System" environment to demonstrate the feasibility of this concept for the whole European constructional steelwork sector.

Advanced Structural Analysis

A new, Windows-based program for all aspects of structural analysis ranging from simple 2D frames to complex structures incorporating beam and plate elements.

Increased analysis capability will offer the structural engineer some of the more advanced analysis techniques identified in EC3, such as order analysis and the analysis of frames with connections of given moment rotation characteristics, in a more accessible, PC-based form.

Examples include:

This Advanced Structural Analysis software will be released in stages between Autumn 1994 and Spring 1995.

STRANGER

Sidercad of Italy have also successfully developed STRANGER, a Windows 3.1 based Structural package, which includes modules for:

Simple Connection Design

A program which aims to lead the designer towards a connection design for which the fabrication will be straightforward. By integrating this program with Advanced Structural Analysis, designers will be able to see clearly the impact of member forces on connection design and will be able to make more consistent decisions in their choice of connection.

The program is based on agreed European approaches to the design and detailing of simple connections and will provide the user with the option to change the values of the defaults. The program will display the fully detailed connection with the option to change the detailing parameters.

Connection detailing software was released in 1992 and further connection design software is scheduled for release during 1994.

Moment Connection Design

A general moment connection design program being developed to test and enhance the design models in the "CIMsteel Design Guide - Connection Procedures to EC3".

The moment connection design software will be available as part of a new 3D steelwork modelling package from Autumn 1994.

Member Design to EC3

An authoritative and comprehensive Windows-based program to carry out structural member design to EC3. The program will design any European, USA or Japanese profile. It will provide both full structure checks of user chosen profiles and the ability to design a profile to the user's criteria.

The EC3 Member Design Software will be available in Spring 1994.

General Calculation Software

An innovative system of computerising free format calculations which will become the personal tool of the engineer. The system will include fully integrated calculation facilities, standard engineering data tables, standard engineering equations and a drawing facility, all of which can be easily pulled together to form computerised calculation sheets.

Transferring calculations traditionally done by hand onto the computer will make a significant contribution to the integration of information flow through the design and manufacturing process. This innovative software will be released in stages during 1994.

Portal Frame Design

A program to design portal frames to EC3 is being developed to test the design models proposed in the "CIMsteel Design Guide - Portal Frame Design to EC3". This specialist software will enable designers and fabricators throughout Europe to realise the economic benefits offered by this particular structural form.

The portal frame design software will be released in stages between Autumn 1994 and Winter 1996.
