The CIS are specifications for data exchange relating to the design, detailing, manufacture and erection of a structural steelwork building frame.  They where developed by the pan-European CIMsteel project.  The initial (limited) CIS/1 specifications where published in 1995 and the (comprehensive) CIS/2 specifications where published in 2000. Since then the AISC has been supporting the realisation of  CIS/2 based data exchange by a group of leading software vendors and end users.
