School of Civil Engineering

About us

Our strong links with industry, via our Industrial Advisory Committee and our employers group, ensures that we are responsive to the needs of industry in our teaching and research.

We provide an excellent educational experience in Civil Engineering, providing undergraduate degrees and masters courses in the areas of structural engineering, environmental engineering, architectural technology, sanitation and waste management and project management.

We are ranked 6th in The Guardian league table and 8th in The Sunday Times league table for Civil Engineering in the UK.

Our research is also recognised for its international standing, achieving a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.6 in the most recent, 2008, UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

Our research feeds directly into curriculum design and teaching and our high ratings for research enable us to maintain our investment in both staff and facilities.

All academic staff are research active and have extensive knowledge and expertise accumulated over time, many of whom are leading experts in their chosen fields of specialisation.

We have long established links with industry and other international organisations, both in the UK and overseas. We also have well-established collaborative links with other schools in the University, and with other academic institutions around the world.

Our vision: By 2015, the School will be recognised for its excellence in research and for providing inspirational research-based teaching for the sustainable development of the forces of nature.
